Beaches on St. Barths

There are a wonderful selection of beaches on St. Barths, all blessed with gleaming white sand. Few are crowded, even in peak season. All are public and free.  Grand Cul de Sac and St. Jean are the two beaches with hotels, restaurants, and water sports.  In addition, Flamands offers a huge stretch of white sand beach fringed with lantier palms with a selection of hotels and restaurants.  The village of Corossol verges on a lovely beach that serves the practical purpose of a fishing port.   The beaches at Marigot and Lorient are secluded and quiet, favored on Sundays by island families.  Petite Cul de Sac is secluded, and usually very quiet; Toiny is wild and beautiful, not for the faint hearted.  Gouverneur is serene; Saline is well worth the hike over the sand dune.   The following is the list of the various beaches on the lovely island of St. Barths.

Anse de Cayes – A lovely but untamed beach, L’Anse des Cayes and its incredible pipelines is one of the surfers’ favorite spots.  This beach is located adjacent to the Hotel Mannapany.

Anse de Colombier - Accessible only by sea or a 20-minute walk along a winding pathway from Flamand, This could explain the peace and quiet found there.  Colombier is idyllic and a favorite spot for yachts to anchor and a popular Sunday picnic spot for the local folk. An integral part of the Marine Reserve, the sea bed near the rocks is particularly rich and colorful. A favorite meeting place for tortoises, rays, lobster and even dolphins.  This beach is still called “Rockefeller’s Beach”, since David Rockefeller owned the property that surrounds it for many years.

Corossol - This charming fisherman’s beach located in the middle of the village of Corossol, harbors dozens of colorful fishing boats. This beach remains a typical example of the traditional style of local life.  The sports enthusiasts of the island love to test their skills during memorable volleyball games. Every year, on august 25th, the St. Louis festival is celebrated.

Flamands - A long stretch of white sand beach, Flamands is the perfect beach for basking in the sun for hours.  When the surf is heavy, swimming among the waves may look difficult, though swimming is rarely hazardous.  Don’t miss this delightful place.  Hotel St-Barth Ile de France and La Langouste are handy for lunch or a drink.

Grand Cul de Sac - The epitome of Caribbean beaches with its lagoon in subtle shades of blue, bordered by palm trees.  The beach borders a shallow, well protected bay and the water is relatively calm.  An ideal place for children and water sports fans. There are several restaurants and hotels on this beach, as well as a windsurfing rental station.

Anse de Grand Font – This beach is a superb example of the untamed coast. It is not recommended for swimming, but is a favorite spot for surfers and body boarders of all kinds. The beach is covered with marvelous shells and coral. A great place to hunt for hidden treasures…

Grands Galets - Earlier known as Grand Galet, this lovely beach in Gustavia got its present name from the thousands of tiny shells covering it.  Sheltered from the breezes, it is an ideal spot for swimming.  The more daring might try diving off the superb cliffs on either side. A great place for snorkeling or trying a specialty from the charming Brazilian restaurant located there.

Grande Saline - The keyword here is nature - a favorite place for naturists. You can reach this wonderful beach of white sands and azure waters by a quaint winding path. This is a must in St. Barths.

Gouverneur - One of the most beautiful private beaches on the island. Not only is there breathtaking natural beauty, but legend has it that the famous pirate Montbar hid his treasure somewhere in the caves.

Lorient Beach – An ideal spot for discovering marine life. Turtles and multicolored fish love to wallow along the coral reef that protects the bay. The beach is popular with local families and is also a favorite place for surfing competitions, regularly held here.

Anse Maréchal – Access to this beach is through the Guanahani hotel.  This lovely, wild but discreet beach is dotted with palm trees.

Marigot Beach - Sheltered, beautiful but wild, Marigot is the only gray-sand beach on the island. One of its main attractions is the lovely palm trees bordering the beach.  The beach is popular with the local families than it is with visitors.

Petit Anse - Nestled next to its big sister, L’Anse des Flamands, la Petite Anse is renowned for its sea bed.  Using just a mask and tube, you will be able to make surprising discoveries under the water.

Petit Cul de Sac -   Due to the depth of the bay and the size of the fringing coral reef, the water here is usually very calm.  This is one of the favorite beaches of the local population for family get-togethers. It is also part of the Marine Reserve which attracts snorkelers who delight in exploring the coral reef.

Anse de Public - Home of the sailing school.  Every year on August 15, Pitea Day, is celebrated in honor of the twinning between St. Barth and the city of Pitea in Sweden.  It is also a great point for enjoying some of the most beautiful sunsets on the island.

St. Jean Beach - St. Jean beach is the first you’ll come upon on arrival in St. Barths. St. Jean actually has two beaches, separated by Eden Rock.  Enjoy a lazy stroll on this long stretch of white sand and sparkling blue water, and discover the restaurants on the water’s edge, as well as the small marine sports center.

Anse Toiny - Located on the “wild coast”, Toiny beach is often deserted. Very strong currents discourage swimmers but attract surfers who live to pit themselves against the waves.
